Honolulu Post at University of Hawaii Junior Engineering Expo
On March 1, 2013, SAME Honolulu Post members attended the University of Hawaii (UH) Junior Engineering Expo to support and encourage engineering students. The Post hosted one of the Expo activities: the SAME Juice Box Tower Challenge, a structural engineering competition.
The annual event was attended by more than 200 students from various middle schools in Oahu, connecting middle schoolers with UH engineering students and others in the engineering industry, including SAME volunteers from the Architect/Engineering (A-E) consulting field. This year, activities included various engineering competitions, such as bridge building, marshmallow catapult and the SAME Juice Box Tower Challenge.
Participants of the SAME Juice Box Tower Challenge were given materials such as tape and construction paper to build a tower. Points were given for each tower’s height and also for the number of juice box that they were able to stacked on top of their towers. Students worked in teams for 30 minutes. Most of the groups’ structures were able to hold 16 juice boxes but some toppled and fell under the weight. Points were totaled and awards were given to the teams who earned the most points.
