First day of 2013 SBC: We’re busy in Kansas City!
The 2013 SAME Small Business Conference (SBC) for Federal Engineering, Construction and Environmental Programs began Nov. 19, in Kansas City, Mo., also known as the City of Fountains. With a plenary session, six concurrent sessions, Small Business Council Meeting, Hiring our Heroes Job Fair and all-day registration, the day was packed as hundreds of attendees bustled from one hall to the next.
In the Army Contracting Command-Business Opportunity Briefing, Alice Williams, Associate Director, Army Contracting Command, OSBP, discussed Army Contracting Command trends and FY14 Small Business Initiatives. Williams also gave top 5 tips for small businesses and top 5 tips for large businesses.
Richard Shelton, P.E., LEED AP, DBIA, President, Royce Construction Services, shared his expertise on Avoiding Design- Build Project Disasters. Shelton discussed design-build best practices and listed the many benefits of design-build projects including the ability to select a firm based on technical approach, conceptual design and price or best value. The number one owner design-build lesson that Shelton shared: don’t let your design‐builder learn how to do design‐build on your project.
At the session How Can I Benefit from the Small Business Conference? first time SBC attendees were given guidelines and tips on maximizing their time at the three-day conference. Ann Mcleod, Meetings Director, SAME, urged attendees to take advantage of technology to make the most of their schedule. Offerings such as the SBC mobile app and SBC website features including downloading handouts and printing the conference attendee list, can make it easier for participants to network and to target business contacts. SAME Small Business Council Past Chair Matt Wallace reminded attendees the importance of mingling and making new contacts, not only during and in-between the sessions but also in the evening, outside of the conference agenda.
The day wrapped up with a Networking Reception in the sold-out Exhibit Hall.
There’s more to come! The second day of 2013 SAME SBC will host its first ever Networking Roundtables- where small businesses can meet with representatives from large businesses and government including NAVFAC, Air Force and USACE.
