SAME Resilience Response & Recovery Forum
Posted on September 21, 2017 | By Stephen Karl
The devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, an unprecedented two Category 4 storms hitting the United States back to back, has created significant requirements for engineers, site assessments, public health, emergency response and various other A/E/C-related capabilities. Hurricanes Maria and Jose are further compounding the need for support. Many SAME member companies and agencies are involved in the recovery efforts, or will be. Many of these same organizations need or will need additional assistance and capabilities to complete their responsibilities in the weeks and months ahead.
With more than 28,000 members and 1,500 Sustaining Member companies, SAME has an extensive network of groups and individuals experienced in disaster response and recovery. SAME has three tools available to leverage our extensive network of Posts and member companies if you or your organization is in need of additional support or are looking to provide support to the disaster relief.
RESILIENCE RESPONSE & RECOVERY FORUM (www.same.org/resilience)
SAME through the National Resilience Committee, chaired by Jim Hagan, F.SAME, has set up a Resilience Response & Recovery Forum on the SAME national website. This service allows Sustaining Member companies and agencies to post requirements and capabilities they are in need of for emergency situations such as the aftermath of Harvey. This forum will be open for a period of 90 days (starting Sept. 15, 2017). The Resilience Committee will screen postings to ensure that the service is effective for its intended use. In the future, when emergency situations warrant, this Resilience Response & Recovery Forum may be re-opened.
Already SAME has heard from the Small Business Administration, which has immediate need for people to include property appraisers, damage verifiers, and engineers for structural damage assessment. These requirements have been posted to the Resilience Response & Recovery Forum. Additionally, we have heard from a Sustaining Member that has similar needs and plans to post information to the forum as well. FEMA is also looking for support from the contracting community.
SAME SUSTAINING MEMBER DIRECTORY (www.same.org/directory)
The online SAME Sustaining Member Directory enables searching for professional services and capabilities. Users can search by company name, office locations, capabilities, emergency response capabilities, and small business categories. The online directory is viewable by all web users. It is up-datable in real time, and designed in a mobile-friendly format—meaning that you can search as easily using your smart phone as your desktop computer.
SAME POST WEBSITES & CONTACT INFORMATION (www.same.org/posts)
With locations in 42 states across the country, SAME Posts provide an effective local network to connect face-to-face with those who may need additional support to fulfill their requirements. All SAME Posts have websites containing contact information for local leadership and many have a list of Sustaining Member companies and agencies that are part of the Post. Reach out to the Post; you may discover that what your firm provides is needed or will be needed during response and recovery efforts.
