Greater Kansas City Post Resumes Military Professional Development Series

The SAME Greater Kansas City Post will resume its Military Professional Development Series on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 with engineer students of the Command & General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

This marks the Post’s first SAME professional development engagement with CGSC students, building on the Post’s Fort Riley Professional Development Series event at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Kansas City District’s Tuttle Creek Dam in 2016. That engagement proved crucial for engineer leaders deploying to Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division’s “Big Red One.”

Friday’s Professional Development Series topic at Fort Leavenworth is “USACE Disaster Response: Capabilities and the Role of Army Engineers Assigned to USACE.” This topic is very timely considering the current disaster response missions that the Corps has ongoing as a result of the hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast and Caribbean in late summer and early fall of 2017.

The Greater Kansas City Post is proud to host and moderate this event, which will be presented by USACE Kansas City District. The event starts at 3:00 p.m. at the Baan Thai Restaurant in Leavenworth, Kan.

As outlined in the 2020 SAME Strategic Plan, recruiting military/government members is a key objective: “Posts grow government/military segment of Post membership by 5 percent per year.” But growing the number of members is only part if the goal for SAME; enhancing professional development of members and supporting industry-government engagement are the primary objectives of bringing more military and government members into the Society. According to the Strategic Plan, “By 2020: The SAME Industry-Government Engagement Plan is effectively producing viable solutions that enhance industry/government collaboration and add value to joint efforts to improve America’s infrastructure. Establish local recognition of the role of SAME among all levels of government, industry, academic and business interests.”

The Greater Kansas City Post has been a leader among SAME’s Posts in establishing relationships with nearby military organizations, including CGSC, Fort Riley and Kansas City District. In addition to the Professional Development Series, Warrior Transition Forums have been held at the bases to provide transitioning soldiers with insights and perspectives on what to expect for themselves and their families as they transition out of uniform, and what they can do before they transition to make the process goes more smoothly and successfully. That can include getting connected with their local SAME Post, which has many members who are entrenched in the community and have ample experience making the transition from uniform to civilian themselves.
