Video: USACE Destroys Levee, Eases Flooding Near Cairo, Ill.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers detonated charges overnight Monday to destroy a section of levee along the Mississippi River in an effort to divert rising floodwaters from the town of Cairo, Ill. The flooding, which has inundated towns and rural areas and set new record-high water levels throughout the Mississippi River Valley this spring, is expected to cause continued problems for communities downstream in the coming days and weeks. The USACE Mississippi Valley Division and the local Corps district oversaw the detonation.
