The SAME 2011 South Central/South Atlantic (SCSA) Regional Conference was held Oct. 18 to 20 in Sandestin, Fla. With a theme of “Engineering America’s Future,” the regional conference focused on securing critical infrastructure through sustainable, energy-efficient solutions.
The regional conference provided a venue for about 800 attendees to discuss trends, network with potential clients and learn about innovative services or products by browsing through 130 exhibitors and participating in numerous workshops and panel discussions. The three-day event featured Eco-conscious workshops, a green car exhibit, presentations on energy efficiency and panel discussions with nationally recognized speakers. Some of the featured speakers were Maj. Gen. Todd Semonite, Commander, USACE South Atlantic Division, Gen. Charles A. “Chuck” Horner, USAF (Ret.) and Terry Yonkers, Assistant Secretary, Air Force Installations, Environment and Logistics. Various DOD agencies and organizations also were represented at the conference including the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency and the US Army Corps of Engineers South Atlantic Division.
Events and presentations were held at the Sandestin Beach Resort and Conference Center, where the pristine waters of Florida’s Emerald Coast provided the appropriate backdrop for presentations advocating sustainable and energy-efficient engineering practices. Protection of Water Resources, Energy Independence and Security, Federal Green Building, Renewable Energy Projects, Reduction of Hazardous Chemicals and Mission Readiness in the face of Climate Change are just some of the topics discussed at the event.
Various presentations also focused on contracting and business opportunities. Topics such as Army-Business Opportunities with South Atlantic Division, Air Force Acquisition and Construction Opportunities and Navy-Business Opportunities with NAVFAC were presented.
